Fire Marshal's Corner: Winter 2007

In this month’s Fire Marshal’s Corner, we start with some very sound advice from South Carolina Fire Marshal John Reich about holiday fire safety, particularly when it comes to Christmas Tree fires. Every year these fires happen, but are very easily preventable with some simple steps. NIST has a great video on how fast a Christmas tree ignites that can be downloaded and used in your public safety programs.

Following that we talk with Mike Love, fire marshal for Montgomery County, MD, about the great electronic groups that he has created for fire prevention professionals. One is called “ePARADE” and focuses on fire marshals, and the other one, the National Fire and Life Safety Educators group focuses on educational issues.

Finally, we have an interview that was done for our companion podcast, Campus Firewatch Radio, with Gail Minger. Gail headed up a governor’s task force to look at fire safety in Kentucky’s colleges and universities. The task force conducted focus groups across the state and published an outstanding report looking at these issues.

On a follow-up, in an earlier podcast we had interview Phil Schaenman about the study he had done in the United Kingdom and Scandinavia looking at fire prevention practices. At the time the report had not been published, but it is now available for download.

The Leader's Toolbox: "I'm Just a Volunteer" & Lessons Learned in Charleston

Hosted by Richard Gasaway

In this month’s episode of The Leader’s Toolbox, Chief Richard Gasaway addresses a question from a firefighter who is frustrated because some of their members have the attitude “You can’t tell me what to do, I’m only a volunteer.” Chief Gasaway takes this attitude head-on with sound advice about how to work through this problem before it destroys your department.

In the second part of the podcast, Chief Gasaway interviews Assistant Fire Chief Brian Crawford from the Shreveport, LA, Fire Department about the role he played in recently conducting an leadership and administration assessment of the Charleston, SC, Fire Department in wake of the tragic Sofa Super Store fire that killed 9 firefighters. Hear first-hand from an assessment team member about how the fire service can benefit from the important recommendations made by the review team.

The Apparatus Architects: Working with Dealers and Warranties

Whether your department is looking to buy a used fire truck or designing a new unit, this month’s edition of The Apparatus Architects is a must. Hosts Tom Shand and Michael Wilbur use their experience to offer advice on the purchase of used apparatus. Hear about how a department lucked out and purchased a 20-year-old ladder truck with only 6,500 miles.

They also will give valuable tips to use when establishing a relationship and negotiating with dealers. After all, your investment may have to last more than 20 years. This podcast also looks at warranties. It’s essential you get one that fits the bill.

The Architects discuss a question about a department’s new policy not use the “Jake Brake” because of noise complaints. They also will offer comment on recent news including the impact of firefighters nabbed for driving under the influence.

Campus Firewatch Radio: On the Set

The People’s Burn Foundation was awarded a DHS Fire Prevention and Safety Grant to develop a cutting-edge campus fire safety training program. A team of experts from across the nation was assembled to help guide the development of this program, and a key component that was selected was producing a compelling video that will draw in today’s “Youtube” generation.

A cast and crew of over 60 people spent a week in Indianapolis shooting this production. On this edition of Campus Firewatch Radio, host Ed Comeau will help us learn more about the project, called “To Hell and Back, The College Years,” from:

Shawn Longerich, executive director of the People’s Burn Foundation; Dan Jones, fire chief from Chapel Hill, NC; and Kindari O’Connor, director and screenplay writer from MediaSauce.

Pilot Sites are Needed!

A key part of this project is pilot site testing during January and we are looking for 50 schools or communities across the country to serve as pilot sites for this program. All of the material will be provided along with full instructions on how to do the pilot site testing program. If you are interested, contact the People’s Burn Foundation at gnewport@peoplesburnfoundation.org or (877) 814-2024.

Leadership on The Line: Depression in the Fire Service

Psychological health is just as important as physical health for all first responders. Both types of health are connected to each other and determine a persons overall well being.

Psychological depression is part of all our lives. Clinical Depression is a medical condition, like high blood pressure if not treated, it can kill you.
Dr. Burton Clark hosts a panel discussion on this topic with Dr. Mike Beasely, Psychologist for Montgomery County, MD, Fire Rescue Department; Retired Chief Mike Chiaramonte, Lynbrook, NY; Lt. Nicol Juratovac, JD, with San Francisco Fire Department; and Fire Service Instructor Carolyn Smith-Clark, MA,.

This podcast was recorded with students of the Fire Service Communication Course, held at the National Fire Academy.
