This month’s show focuses on truck company tactics, and includes the non-traditional tasks involving technical rescue, chemical protective operations and hazmat response. How do officers juggle all the training required for the many jobs now facing firefighters? Guests include Captain Mike Dugan of FDNY Ladder 123; Rod Ford, of the Glenwood, NY, Fire Company; Lt. Dave Gallagher, retired from the Huber Heights, OH, Fire Department and Santa Rosa, CA, Captain Wes Kitchel.The panelists are given the following scenario: You arrive at 2:37 a.m. to find a two-story wood-frame house on fire. Your immediate size-up shows there is heavy fire showing from three windows on the second floor - two on side A and two on side B. Heavy smoke is issuing from the other windows on the second floor and the gable vents. The mother is frantic because her two children are still upstairs. You are unable to get the exact location of their rooms. The first engine is at least one minute out. As you force the front door, the smoke is banked down and black. What would you do?

Also, the debate over the use of positive pressure ventilation has been ongoing for years. These veteran firefighters and officers will talk about their feelings on the issue.

Training & Tactics Talk: Engine Company Operations

Every time an engine company rolls out the door, there are a number of differences between each city, while the common goal is contain the fire. This show begins with a discussion of engine company responsibilties in their respective department’s including rapid intervention, hoseline choice, staffing and securing the water supply.

The discussion continues over the long-time debate on dry versus charged hose lines being stretched at structural fires. Staffing deems the diameter hose used when arriving at a commercial building fire, which ranges from a 1 ¾-inch to a 2 ½-inch hose and high rise operations have changed after previous incidents determined some best practices.

The roundtable discussion of Training & Tactics Talk ends with a scenario where the engine company is first-due and the next company is delayed. Here’s the scenario: It’s 10:30 PM and you arrive at a 2,500-square-foot house with heavy smoke showing from two sides and dispatch tells you that the next company is seven minutes out. It’s you as the engine company officer, a driver and two firefighters. As you approach the house, you look inside a vehicle and see two car seats in the back. No one is outside the house and the neighbors are not around. What would you do?
